Here are some dog portraits in coloured pencil that depict the individual character of animals that I know, as well as more recent studies of farm animals using graphite and watercolour. The drawings strive to portray the animals’ body shape, sense of weight and energy.

Since animals are always moving, I often sketch from my own reference photos.  It’s important for me to capture the proportions, movement and energy of each subject – to “get to know the animal” and its unique behaviour.  If I haven’t spent time with the subject and observed it directly, I find it very difficult to capture these qualities in a way that is true to my vision.
